The FISH! Philosophy Network

I'm here to share a beautiful story about a phenomenal company that literally practices what it preaches! I’m blessed to work for ChartHouse Learning, home of the FISH! Philosophy. I’ve been here for more than 12 years and call this my home away from home with my coworkers being my extended family.
I can honestly say each and every person here has a kind, loving heart which I’ve had the privilege of experiencing time after time. The most recent example of this came after my husband was diagnosed with advanced metastasized renal cell carcinoma in May 2009. He’s had one major surgery plus 2 minor ones along with seven different extended hospitalizations…not to mention the overabundant doctor visits. It’s been exhausting, confusing, scary, and unbelievable how your life can change in a split second!
During my numerous absences from the office to be with my husband during this battle, my coworkers stepped right in to cover my job! No questions, no hesitations, no grumbling. They just took more responsibilities on their plates, unconditionally, for me. Talk about a heartwarming gift of love!
As if that wasn’t enough, in December 2009 our small but mighty company offered donations to help others during the holiday (giving) season. We had a box for the food shelf, a box for clothing, and a silent auction where employees donated personal items and other employees anonymously bid on them to raise money. This was all organized by a team of a few employees forming a “Make Their Day” Committee.
We had a wonderful holiday potluck extravaganza where the MTD committee announced the donations collected for charities. Time came to announce the amount collected from the silent auction and to my utter shock, amazement and overwhelming gratitude, they handed me an envelope filled with a generous amount of cash!! It took a few seconds to sink in and I completely poured out my emotion as the tears streamed down my cheeks.
As I hugged and thanked everyone in the room, I can’t even describe the warm, sincere, loving hugs I got back. They all thanked ME for giving them the opportunity to do something that felt so wonderful to do!! I know…right? I told you I’m fortunate to be around such an amazing group of people!!
As I hugged the owner and accused him, in a teasing way, of being the instigator of this event…He replied, “It wasn’t me! It was everyone here. Just enjoy…it starts at HOME.” Yes, home. Again, how lucky we are to have a workplace to call our home away from home!
The amazing, generous gifts of unconditional love continue to fall in our laps while we continue on this unfortunate journey of battling cancer.

Whatever a person is battling, going through or struggling with, it is truly comforting that one does not have to concern themselves with the responsibilities of their everyday work load. Surely, it is a responsibility but when you have a true community, caring for one another it exemplifies that we care about each other and will "be there" not just for celebratory times, but challenging times as well. We hold each other up and take care of the voids. That is community...that is living into who we are... and that is loving who you work with and for!
