As a volunteer at our local Red Cross blood collection center, I’ve always enjoyed handing out juice and cookies to people after they have donated blood. They appreciate it and it’s a small way to thank them for their donation.

One day I came up with the idea of garnishing the juice cups at the Red Cross with little umbrellas—the kind you get in tropical drinks.

Laughter and jokes about “happy hour” are the usual responses to the umbrellas. The umbrellas also seem to act as an icebreaker for donors to talk with one another. On more than one occasion people have given me a group toast! I tell them it’s just my way of bringing a little fun into their world.

Before the umbrellas I know people felt appreciated. But now they take with them a memorable and lighthearted experience as well.
