The FISH! Philosophy Network

I have a story that I feel I must tell the network. I should be writing 310 end of the year reports but somethings are far more important. Like spreading the joy of working in a school that has adopted the fish philosophy.
Today I took a grade of 6 and 7 year olds to visit the residents of the aged care home down the road from our school. The residents of this home have been active members of our community. They have helped build public halls, entertainment centers, sporting clubs, service clubs, businesses and now they lead a very different life in the home.
Before we left I asked the children to simply Make Their Day..
That was all I said to the children because I knew that they knew exactly what that meant. Because in a Fish School we talk and do things like Make Their Day all the time.
As planned the residents were enjoying the music played by a small band and they were singing all their favorite songs when we arrived. The children sat in front and began to clap and sway along with the music. Before long they were dancing and singing with the residents and holding hands with the ones sitting. There were moments during our visit that I worried that the children may have felt uncomfortable with some of the residents. When I went to rescue the kids they all said that they were fine and that they wanted to be there. What a beautiful moment! Traf kids really understands the essence of Making Their Day. It's not about yourself its about doing it for someone else. I love seeing kids doing that. Today our kids Made the whole community of Trafalgar's Day. In doing so I know the kids felt really fabulous about themselves. Feeling good is precious.

Hi Di and others
Great stuff! This is what PYP would call 'action' - we can talk about things forever, as teachers we can think we've taught things, but when the children do things like this naturally that's special.

One of the nicer parts of being a teacher/trainer, the rewards when the students connect with someone or something, well done Di, and the students!!!
