The FISH! Philosophy Network

Well, using FISH at work seems quite easy, particularly when you have built a culture that empasses FISH within the organisation, using FISH in the real world is perhaps more confronting.

Why do I think that? Well, having travelled half way around the world and having lined up in every queue in Europe (a slight exaggeration) I have endured the raving of many people that perhaps needed to be introduced the philosophy! However I must say that during these times I quietly evoked an internal mantra (or two) that reminded me that the way I behaved in response to the people around me was equally important for my own well being as well as theirs. So when I was pushed past, elbowed, complained to ( not directly usually in a rant at the great unknown) I used the smile technique, or simply let them through..........afterall one second differnce between my place in the queue and the next was not going to make much difference was it?

Now, that may have been easier because the rewards were views from the Eiffel Tower, the colusseum, Sistine chapel etc, but I would prefer to think that I have taken the principles and have learned to apply them in my life...................though I have to say sometimes it wasnt that easy!

Welcome home Vicki! I'm just wiping my tears after watching the Randy Pausch lecture. What a powerful lecture and what a wonderful gift for his kids. Thinking about the gifts we leave our kids at school and at home. Hmmmm, after Randy's lecture it really makes you realize the importance of teaching and I don't just mean at school. So glad you intend to show the staff, there is so much in this lecture I will be revisiting it again and again. It would be great to get all staff to write their thoughts after viewing Randy's lecture.
I'll be doing my thing in Tassie next week and drumming in Shepparton the next, so I hope I dont miss all the fun.
I especially hope I get to talk to Gerard re: Geelong's premiership.
Can't wait to hear about your travels, but most of all i cant wait to solve the world's problems with you.
See you soon.
Are you thinking about Randy's attitude to brick walls?

I often think that, today we lived in mutual harmony helping each other and being civil...........tomorrow may be another day...........but I am taking her and her friend rollerskating............sometimes I work to make her day too.

Good that you wrote that because things could change with her tomorrow and it might help for you to come back and read it!

Griff,
I think you may have hit on something very important there. I actually find it much harder to apply to my family (particularly my teenage daugther) but I think that's because you are so familiar with each other and the expectations are greater. I know at work we (those of us with teenage children) have often discussed our trials and tribulations, we have found this lightens the load, but we have also found that we share the FISH philosophy and comment about how we should have behaved differently........of course its not perfect, but we can learn from our expereinces.
And I must say I'm very pleased that today my daughter has packed up her own clean washing and put it away, she has made me a cup of coffee, and warned me that it was raining so I could bring the washing in............perhaps after my rantings yesterday she has learned something from the experience too...............at least its made my day!

Welcome back, Vic! Yep, CYA (choose your attitude) has wide applicability I'm discovering, too... but you're right, it takes practice and often is not easy.

In the middle of our moving out of our house last week, I also had to get my taxes done. My wife wasn't happy, since I should have done them back in April and now, when I was needed to help box up our stuff and clean the house, I had to get them done. She was right, of course, but I was crabby for a couple of days until it dawned on me... I was a lucky guy to A) be moving from one nice place to live to another nice place; and B) to have made a decent income last year so that I have to pay taxes!

It snapped me out of my crabbiness. And I got the dang taxes done sooner than my wife expected and she was happy!
