Ok, its time for some more FISH stories. Today was just the most wonderful example. I was sitting in my office talking to Raelee about the things we had to complete today, just a general "catchup" time when Debbie the secretary came through the door asking if I could see a parent that had an issue to discuss with me. As we have an open door policy I asked her in. There we were, Raelee, the parent, and myself, sitting around my office table. Angela has been a parent at our school this year and she started by saying " before I talk about Jordyn I just want to tell you something" She continued " I've been to three schools and our last one was nothing like this. At our last school the staffroom was considered only for the staff. Last week I was in your staffroom counting money from the bookfair and I noticed it was getting close to recess. I was really feeling uncomfortable because we had spread out over the table and we were in the staffroom. I thought ..the teachers will be in here any minute, I was starting to panic but noticed the other parents weren't worried at all. Then the bell went........do you know that one of your teachers came up and hugged me? They told me that the parents club are fantastic and that they appreciated the work we do? That was weird! Then a couple sat down and apologised that they were in my way? my way I thought its their "staffroom", as I was sitting there thinking this is weird I looked around and Bailey was in the staffroom (Bailey is a grade 1 student) and the staff were talking to him. That would never have happened at my old school. I'm telling all my girlfriends, its weird but its great!
She then placed complete trust in us that we would sort out Jordyn's problems (which took about 5 mins of discussion) and merrily went out with a huge smile.............she left two huge smiles in my office too!

Great story, Vic. Sounds like it was a combination of A) some intelligent problem-solving; and B) a staff culture that welcomes/embraces parents (both your open-door and the staffroom).
I don't think FISH! can take credit for that but the principles of 'Be there' and 'Make their day' certainly reinforces/applies to B.

A postscript to this story is that ANgela rang the next day and told us that Jordyn's problems wre indeed solved. She said that we knew our kids very well and couldnt believe that we had already worked out and solved the issue. We are very proud here that we do know our kids well, and that we have taken on a whole school approach to OUR kids.
