Kids' learning today compared to kids' learning 10 years ago

This year marks a new milestone for both Trafalgar Primary School and myself and yet another area in which we hope to become ‘world famous.’ Over the past few months our old multipurpose room has been transformed into a modern technological hub for multimedia and music creation, communication and video production and the kids are thriving. It is inspiring to see kids totally engaged in learning new skills and applying old skills in new ways through technology, I love my job!The world around us…See More

This is a very old post Hanrey! My name is Ben and Tristan and I work together at Traf Primary school in Australia. We are currently using Google Docs with our Grade 5/6 students instead of MS Word in both the classroom and our recently completed…

The reason I teach!

I have to say that Trafalgar Primary School in Australia is a great place to work! The staff are great, but the all inspiring and motivating factor about working at Trafalgar is the kids. Tonight we held a performing arts concert at school. There were a couple of moments where I was stressed out, but once again the students "made my day!" Not only did a few of our singing students perform beautifully and most importantly, "in key" (anybody teaching music in a school will know this joy), wowing… Continue

Just to add to my post... I am very passionate about the music program at our rather "Fishy" school and the kids in the band "make my day" every time they play!!!

“School Of Rock”

Trafalgar Primary School has long been renowned for its superb performing arts program and extensive range of extra curricular musical and performance based activities. Nothing has changed! In fact over the past four years the number of students involving themselves in the performing arts program at our school has doubled. With an enrolment of approximately 320 students, 200 or more of our talented students are undertaking performing arts activities in some form. We… Continue

That's cool! It really isn't that scary is it? I I will admit that although I am a self proclaimed nerd nowadays, it worried me that my thoughts etc were going to be viewed by so many people online, but I am over that now! You can make some great contacts via these blogs and they can be helpful in providing information and resources for projects and curriculum ideas. I think that we will get more from the DNC blog though, I know that I will learn more from that forum to help my teaching! Technology is great though isn't it?!

still dont class my self as a fully fledged nerd as yet as this technology is still quite alien to me. But i figured out it wasn't as hard as i thought it would be and no where near as scary as i thought.
cheers

Bugger the reports! I've been trying for 2 hours to start but you are in my head so I'll start tomorrow or the next day. Reggio Emilia is a place. But it so happens that in that place they have these amazing early childhood centers that provide the worlds educators with questions they may ponder. Just like you are doing now. You are developing a philosophy of pedagogy in line with those who are looking at the Reggio educators. Reggio Emilia is not a program its more about not knowing rather than knowing. By you seeking to collaborate, your interest in projects and most important your image of the child, that is one that is capable and resourceful means that you are talking and questioning like a true Reggio educator. There is no denying it Ben, welcome aboard, I've been waiting for someone like you. You have just made my stay at Traf a whole lot more exciting

Yeah Ben, thanks so much for asking me to be part of your next project. I'd love to. It is so much better to work collaboratively, better for the teachers sharing, debating and wondering together. And great for the kids to have 4 ears and 4 eyes listening to them.
A movie sounds fantastic! My hunch is that the kids will absolutely fly with this and they will take us on a journey that will blow us away and blow up our minds as it will make us question our own philosophy teaching and learning.
What do I think about project based learning? I have been interested in the projects that have come out of Reggio Emilia and the principles behind the projects. There is alot out there including Griff''s ed vision schools.
Perhaps we could get a discussion group together that met maybe once a month for breakfast or tea with the purpose of sharing and questioning the projects that are happening or the potential of more to come. I'm sure we have Traf staff and parents interested and I know some other teachers from around the region who would like to create a network.
What do you reckon?

I'm old and boring so it's okay for me to be here on holidays, but when I look and see that you are online at the same time I worry. Hey this is like the kids doing the msn thing the only trouble is you haven't replied and I'm going to google some travel sites, because that is my fun. Tragic isnt it?
