I too enjoy languages, but regrettably I'm fantastically mediocre when it comes to learning them. I've dabbled in French, German, Spanish and Danish, but in all cases have never really had the self-belief (or perhaps discipline) to get anywhere with them. The best experience I had with learning a language was spending time in France, there's a lot to be said for fully immersing yourself in a language and it's incredible how just saying English words in a French accent, coupled with some overzealous hand gestures, can get you through!

40 years of teaching eh? I'm sure you must have needed to 'choose your attitude' on quite a few occasions! Notice you've said you haven't read the Fish! book or seen any of the films, would really recommend them to you. You can buy the original book on eBay for £2.49 delivered, so no excuse eh =)
